Resident Spotlight: The Friends of Paul's Run
Residents of Paul’s Run know how to live life to the fullest. And for the members of Friends of Paul’s Run, giving fulfills their daily living.

Founded in 1981 by five innovative residents, Friends of Paul’s Run is entirely operated by residents whose mission is to enhance the lives of fellow residents.

The active Friends do more than write checks. They identify needs and organize fundraisers to pay for improvements to their community. Major fundraisers have supported or subsidized the purchase of a bus, pet therapy, two electronic organs, many wheelchairs, and numerous cultural programs.

This is a business, not a social club, notes Caroline Willms, current President of Friends.
When Ms. Willms moved to Paul’s Run in 2004 she joined the Friends and continued to volunteer at her church, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mayfair. This past November, she and Doris DeLeon, Treasurer, co-chaired the Friends’ Annual Bazaar which raised $5,000 selling baked goods, handmade crafts, and raffle tickets for gift baskets. “It’s important that people are aware of the many ways we contribute to improving every day life at Paul’s Run,” she says. “Friends of Paul’s Run members work together to make a difference in other people’s lives.”

Working together is key to the Friends’ phenomenal fundraising success and business management. Over the years, they have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to The Fellowship Fund, which aids residents whose funds are depleted. They also fund the holiday gift drive for residents and support the resident’s library. In 2008, through fundraisers, donations, memorial gifts from families and bequests made to the Friends’ organization, they also donated $20,000 for General Store renovations; contributed $20,000 toward planned renovations at Paul’s Run; and gave $2,000 to support the new Clinical Pastoral Education program.

When asked what she considers the best thing about living at Paul’s Run, Mrs. DeLeon replies, “It’s all about being with people. Every day I have the privilege of coming in contact with people who focus not on our age, but on our health, our life and on giving and living.”

Go Birds! A crafter at the Paul's Run bazaar shows off her Philadelphia-appropriate wares.
The Paul's Run Holiday Bazaar: A Great Day for All!

On November 15th, Paul's Run residents, family members and community members were treated to a marvelous holiday bazaar!  Hosted by the Friends of Paul's Run, a committee that raises funding for Paul's Run Benevolent Care, the place was packed from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (even though the official start time wasn't until 10 a.m.!)

The Paul’s Run World Class Staff Team made amazing gift baskets that were raffled off for the bazaar. Handmade crafts of knit goods, holiday decorations, and other items were made by the residents and sold. The baked goods table had quite a variety of delicious delectables. Apple cakes, cupcakes, candies, baklava, pies and more were available, but sold out by noon! Other wares for sale were gently used books, greeting cards, animated stuffed animals, and jewelry.

Everyone enjoyed lunch, with items like hot dogs, hoagies, soft pretzels, funnel cakes, and sodas on the menu!  Everyone that attended had a great day for a great cause.
